The moment you decide to visit Serenity Mara Legends Camp, the adventure has already begun. Getting to the Maasai Mara is, in many ways, part of the experience itself. It’s a journey that takes you from the familiar world of cities and airports into one of the most extraordinary natural environments on earth. Whether you choose to fly in over the breathtaking Great Rift Valley or wind your way through the scenic Kenyan countryside by road, every route to our camp carries its own beauty and its own sense of anticipation. Here is everything you need to know to get here smoothly, comfortably, and with the excitement building exactly as it should.
Starting Point: Nairobi, Kenya’s Vibrant Capital
For the vast majority of our guests, the journey to Serenity Mara Legends Camp begins in Nairobi. Nairobi is Kenya’s bustling, energetic capital city and the main international gateway into the country. Nairobi is well connected to major cities across the world, with Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) serving as the primary point of arrival for international travellers.
Several world-class airlines operate direct and connecting flights into Nairobi from Europe, North America, Asia, the Middle East, and across Africa, making it one of the most accessible safari starting points on the continent. Once you land in Nairobi, you are already closer to the Maasai Mara than you might think. From here, the final leg of your journey to us is a genuinely exciting one.
If your international schedule allows for a stopover in Nairobi, we warmly recommend spending a night or two in the city before heading to the Mara. Nairobi has much to offer the curious travellers. From the wonderful Nairobi National Museum and the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant orphanage, to excellent restaurants, vibrant markets, and a cafe culture that is among the finest in East Africa. It is a wonderful way to ease into the rhythm of Kenya before the Mara takes your breath away entirely.

Option One: Flying to the Mara: The Scenic, Swift Choice
For guests who want to maximise their time in the Maasai Mara and arrive in style, flying is without question the most exciting and efficient way to reach us. And the good news is that it could not be more straightforward.
Wilson Airport – Your Departure Point
Domestic flights to the Maasai Mara depart from Wilson Airport, a smaller, charmingly atmospheric airfield located in the Langata area of Nairobi. It is approximately 6 kilometres from the city centre and around 20 kilometres from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Transfers between the two airports are easy to arrange, and we are always happy to help coordinate this for our guests.
Wilson Airport has a character all of its own. It’s a busy, purposeful hub of small aircraft coming and going, with pilots in casual conversation by the tarmac, and the unmistakable energy of people setting off on adventures. It is the kind of place that gets the pulse quickening in the most delightful way.
The Flight Itself – A Safari Before the Safari
The flight from Wilson Airport to the Maasai Mara takes approximately 45 minutes to one hour, depending on the airstrip and the specific routing. It is operated by several reputable Kenyan domestic carriers, which offer regular scheduled services throughout the day. These include: SafariLink Aviation, AirKenya, and Fly540.
But here is the thing about this flight that first-time visitors are never quite prepared for: it is spectacular. Small propeller aircraft fly at low altitudes, which means the views are extraordinary from the moment you lift off. The urban sprawl of Nairobi gives way to the sweeping escarpments of the Great Rift Valley, one of the most dramatic geological features on the planet, stretching away to the horizon in a panorama that makes every passenger reach instinctively for their camera.
From there, the landscape transitions through the highlands, the rolling hills of the Mara region, and finally, yet gloriously, the vast, golden savannah of the Maasai Mara itself, spread out below you like the most beautiful map you have ever seen. By the time the wheels touch down, you are already, unmistakably, in Africa.
Mara Ol Kiombo Airstrip – Our Closest Landing Point
Serenity Mara Legends Camp is located just a short drive from the Mara Ol Kiombo Airstrip. It is one of the Maasai Mara’s most conveniently positioned airstrips and the one we recommend as the primary arrival point for our guests. From wheels down to your first welcome drink at camp, the transfer is swift, smooth, and more often than not, accompanied by your first wildlife sightings of the trip, as game drives in the Mara begin the moment you leave the airstrip.
Our team will be waiting for you at the airstrip with a warm smile and a safari vehicle ready to whisk you to camp. The transfer takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes, and yes, you may very well spot elephants, zebras, or giraffes before you even reach your tent. The Mara wastes no time in making its introductions.

Other Nearby Airstrips
In addition to Mara Ol Kiombo, the Maasai Mara is served by several other airstrips, including Keekorok, Mara North, and Ol Seki. Depending on your flight routing and specific schedule, arrivals into these airstrips can also be arranged, with road transfers to camp organised accordingly. Our team is always on hand to advise on the best option based on your individual travel plans.
A Note on Luggage for Flights
If you are flying into the Mara on a domestic aircraft, please be aware that luggage weight limits apply, typically around 15 kilograms per person, in a soft-sided bag. Hard suitcases are generally not permitted due to the limited cargo space on small aircraft. We strongly recommend packing your safari essentials in a soft duffel bag for the Mara leg of your journey, with any excess luggage stored securely at your Nairobi hotel until your return. This is standard safari practice, and most Nairobi hotels are well accustomed to accommodating luggage storage for guests heading to the bush.
Option Two: Driving to the Mara – The Scenic Road Journey
For guests who prefer to experience Kenya’s landscape at ground level, or who are travelling as a group and find the road option more practical, the drive from Nairobi to the Maasai Mara is a genuinely rewarding journey that offers its own rich collection of sights, experiences, and stories.
The Route
The most commonly used road route from Nairobi to the Maasai Mara follows the B3 highway through Narok (the main town serving the Mara region) before continuing south and west into the reserve. The total distance is approximately 270 kilometres, and the journey takes between five and six hours depending on road conditions, traffic out of Nairobi, and any stops along the way.
What You Will See Along the Way
The drive is far more than simply a means of getting from A to B. Leaving Nairobi, the road climbs into the highlands before dramatically descending into the Great Rift Valley. The valley floor stretches away in every direction, dotted with lakes, volcanic formations, and Maasai homesteads that hint at the cultural richness of the region you are entering.
Through Narok, the character of the landscape begins to shift noticeably. The air feels fresher, the light different, and the horizon wider. Maasai herders move their cattle along the roadside. Acacia trees line the route with increasing frequency. And somewhere along that final stretch of road, as the savannah opens up around you and the first wildlife appears in the distance, the Maasai Mara announces itself in the most quietly thrilling way imaginable.

Practical Travel Tips for Getting to the Mara
Before we wrap up, here are a few practical pointers to make your journey to Serenity Mara Legends Camp as smooth as possible.
Book Your Flights Early.
Domestic flights to the Mara operate on small aircraft with limited seating, and they fill up quickly, particularly during peak season between July and October. We recommend booking your domestic flights at the same time as your camp reservation to avoid disappointment.
Allow Buffer Time in Nairobi.
International travel comes with its uncertainties, with delayed flights, immigration queues, and the general unpredictability of long-haul journeys. Building in a buffer night in Nairobi before your domestic connection gives you peace of mind and the flexibility to handle any unexpected delays without stress.
Confirm Your Transfer Arrangements in Advance.
Whether you are flying or driving, please confirm your transfer details with our team ahead of your arrival. We will make sure everything is in place so that your journey from the airstrip or the road to our camp is seamless and welcoming.
Travel Insurance is Essential.
We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical evacuation for all safari travel. The Maasai Mara is a remote environment, and having the right cover in place gives you the freedom to enjoy every moment of your adventure with complete peace of mind.
